Types of pleural diseases include:
  • Pneumothorax: a collection of air or gas in the area surrounding the lungs.
  • Pleural effusion: liquid that surrounds the lungs
  • Pleurisy: pleural inflammation that causes sharp pain in the chest
  • Mesothelioma

Pleurisy is aggravated by respiration or coughing. Occasionally, pleurisy is associated with chest cavity fluid.

Pleurisy can be caused by a wide range of factors, including acute viral or bacterial lung infection, damage caused by blood clots, lung surface tumors, or even rib fractures.
